Student Employment Information

Student employment is your opportunity to gain valuable work experience and help cover some of your educational expenses. Federal and state student employment earnings can be excluded from your income on your next year’s Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by listing it under taxable earnings from need–based employment.

There are two types of on–campus and off–campus student employment programs:

  • Need–based Federal/State Work–Study (FWS/SWS), and
  • Non–need–based Institutional Student Employment (ISE).

It is your responsibility to find a student employment position. You must complete the FAFSA to determine eligibility for FWS/SWS. The FAFSA is not required or needed to determine eligibility for ISE. You are allowed to work 10 hours per week/20 hours per pay period for all student employment programs during the academic year. Payroll checks are generated on a bi–weekly basis.

To be eligible for student employment you must:

  • be enrolled in a degree–seeking program,
  • meet satisfactory academic progress requirements,
  • be pursuing your first undergraduate degree, and
  • be registered for a minimum of six credits per semester.
