Peer Tutoring

When you want to help with a class, pick up a tutor request form at the Academic Assistance Office, Briggs Library Room 362. We will arrange for you to meet a tutor at a time that fits your schedule. For best results, make your request during the first eight weeks of the semester. The tutors are UMM students who have been certified by faculty. Tutoring is free and requests can be made whenever the Library is open.

You may also fill out the request form and bring it in to our office or email as an attachment to aactutor@morris.umn.edu.

Interested in becoming a peer tutor?
Peer Tutors are UMM students who work with other students (one-on-one or in groups) to help them understand course material, prepare for tests, or organize for final projects. Some tutors will assist students whose native language is not English. Tutors must be certified by faculty in the subjects they wish to tutor. Their role is to facilitate learning, not to teach. Tutors receive training in methods that help students learn.

General Responsibilities

  1. Fill out a Tutor Information Sheet at the AAC to register as a Peer Tutor. The faculty will need to certify you. This doesn't necessarily mean you had an A in the course; nor does the class have to be within your major. You will need to fill out a new sheet each semester you wish to tutor, so that we have your current class schedule.
  2. A Student Employment Contract is filled out and brought over to Financial Aid. You do not have to be work-study eligible to be a tutor. Your time sheets are picked up in the AAC office; then signed and returned on certain payroll dates.
  3. Three hours of training are required before you begin tutoring.
  4. Tutoring groups generally meet in the library for an hour (two hours is the limit for one session). Tutoring usually ends on the last day of classes. If you change your meeting time or location, be sure to inform the AAC.
  5. Arrive on time for tutoring sessions. Do not wait more than 15 minutes for a tutee to arrive. If a tutee fails to show up without contacting you more than once, notify AAC and they will contact the student.
  6. Complete a Record of Tutoring Hours form and drop off at AAC after each tutoring session.
  7. Use the AAC Information Board to leave messages for your tutees if you can't reach them by phone. AAC can post messages for you if necessary contact the AAC office at 6178. Leave a message on voice mail if the office is closed.
  8. Information observations of your tutoring sessions may be conducted by experienced tutors or AAC staff to provide you with feedback about your tutoring.
  9. Tutor evaluation forms will be sent to your tutees at the end of the semester. After AAC has processed them, they will be sent to your P.O. Box.
