At UMM, Student Counseling provides free personal, crisis, and developmental counseling, educational programming and outreach, and maintains a confidential service for students who have been sexually harassed or harassed based on race, sexual orientation or religion.

Student Counseling's mission focuses on the emotional, intellectual, spiritual, physical, occupational and social development of students. Our services are preventative and educational in nature and come from a developmental perspective. Students in crisis and those with chronic mental illnesses are served in the capacity deemed appropriate. Ongoing consulation to students in living groups and to faculty in regards to student well being is also provided. In addition, Student Counseling supports the academic mission of the University by maintaining a testing program including foreign language and math placement exams, undergraduate and graduate admission exams, and licensing exams.

What is Counseling?

Counseling is a process in which a counselor helps students gain insight about themselves, their behaviors, attitudes, relationships, etc. while also trying to help them understand the world in which we live. Counselors first develop a helping relationship with students such that they feel supported and accepted, regardless of their presenting issues. Through inquiry, clients and counselors explore feelings, beliefs, values and behaviors that connected to the problems they face. Students are encouraged to set personal, and developmental goals and both the counselor and student will discuss how the student can best meet those goals.

Why talk to a counselor?

Many students believe that their problems are "not big enough" to warrant talking to a counselor. We're here to work with all students regardless of the severity of a problem. Each year students seek counseling for multiple reasons:

  • Homesickness
  • Sadness and depression
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Motivation
  • Relationships
  • Sexual assault and harassment
  • Sexual orientation and coming out
  • Grief and loss
  • Alcohol and drug use
  • Roommate conflicts
  • Undecided Major

We are also here to talk to you if you are concerned about another person and want information on how to help that person.
