Freshman Year

  • Identify your life interests, work values, and skills.
  • Research careers of interest, looking for careers that match the interests, values, and skills you identified.
  • Create a personal career action plan that includes at least three alternatives.
  • Participate in volunteer activities on campus in Morris area. Consult Campus Compact.
  • Join campus clubs/organizations in your area of interest.

  • Use classes to explore different possible areas of interest, talk to faculty about careers in their fields. Selection of major is best done by end of sophomore year.
  • Build mentor relationships with faculty/staff and upper class students. (Consider Morris Academic Partners and Morris Administrative Intern Programs for junior year)
  • Plan for study abroad, undergraduate research opportunities, internships, tutorials, and volunteer experiences.
  • Talk to your academic advisor.
  • If undecided about your major, participate in "Undecided Majors" workshops.
  • Attend Alumni Career Fair in the fall to talk to alums from your major, or who are working in fields you are interested in.
  • Seek part-time/summer jobs in area of interest to acquire experience and skills/knowledge.
  • Attend UMM Summer Job/Camp Fair in winter.
