Runners compete in Iowa

Seventeen members of the UMM Running Club
competed in the Living History Farms
Off-Road Race last Saturday. The 5.35-mile
race is the largest cross-country race in
the U.S. and draws runners from across the
upper Midwest. The race is unique in that
it takes the participants across a variety
of terrain, from gravel roads to plowed
fields to wooded trails, complete with
many stream crossings and steep hills.

The club finished 9th out of 31 teams in
the co-ed team competition with members
Jake Krohn, Steve Formaneck, Anne Skoglund,
and Beth Walsh running for a combined time
of 2:53:04.

Women's results - 965 finishers
Anne Skoglund 45:53 (63), Beth Walsh 51:45

Addy Schwartz 54:36 (268), Dana Knutson 1:05:24
(705), Jen Luther 1:06:14 (734)

Men's Results - 1609 finishers
Jake Krohn 36:04 (140), Steve Formaneck 39:23

Here is one proposed design for the first club shirt. If you have a better idea, draw it up and submit it to the club's mailbox, #14SC, in the Student Center. All submissions are due by the first of November.

Below is an email sent to the club on the 22nd:

Runners -

Lots of news in this email, so it might be worthwhile
to read it and see if anything interests you.

I. Iowa Trip

Registration time for Living History farms is upon
us. If you haven't heard my ravings on this race,
LHF is a 5.7 (or more...) mile race around an old
farmstead in Des Moines, Iowa. It's a huge (2000 +
people) race through some real cross-country terrain
like streams, woods, and fields. Along the way
you're sure to encounter gates and hay bales to
climb, water to slosh through, logs to jump over,
and plenty of hills to struggle up. All finishers get
a nice long-sleeved shirt and are eligible for age
division awards and door prizes.

This trip will involve a two-night (Friday and Saturday)
stay in Des Moines at a nice hotel only 1/2 mile from
the starting line of the race. We will leave Morris
at _noon_ on Friday and return sometime Sunday afternoon.

How much will this be? We made a very rough estimate
and figured that each person should have to pay the
club no more than $40. For this, you get:

- Transportation to Iowa
- 2 nights lodging (w/ pool and hot tub)
- Race registration
- A UMM Running Club long-sleeved t-shirt
  (more on that below)

Add in a couple of meals and some spending money and
you're ready to go!

If you're interested in going, you'll need to
do three things:

1. Go to http://www.fitnesssports.com/LHFentry.html
and print off the entry form found there. Print it
off and put it in the club's mailbox (#14SC) in
   Student Activities.
2. Email us (runclub@morris.umn.edu) and tell us you're
   interested in going.
3. Come to the meeting THIS THURSDAY at 6:00 (place to
   be announced) for further details.

II. Group Run news

We're moving up the Tuesday and Thursday group runs
to 6:00. It just gets too dark too soon to make 7:00
runs safe. We haven't seen too many of you at the runs
lately, so hopefully this will get some people back out.

III. Club Shirts

One possible design idea for the club shirt can
be seen at:
   http://www.morris.umn.edu/runclub/news.shtml
If you would like to submit an idea, turn it in to
the club by the first of November to be considered for
printing. The shirts will be a long-sleeved, heavy weight,
100% cotton shirt. Guaranteed to impress your friends or your
money back...

That should do it. I will send out another email this
week confirming the location of our Thursday night meeting.

The first-annual Cougar Quad was a resounding success. Sixty-six people registered to compete; nearly sixty of them braved the cold winds to have some fun. Joel Rovang of Moorhead, Minnesota and Chris Haukos of St. Cloud took top honors in the men's and women's divisions, respectively. More in-depth results can be found here.

A big thank you goes out to all of the sponsors, campus organizations, and especially the volunteers who withstood the freezing weather to help make the race a great time.

9/5/00

A new year means big new plans for the club. We had our first meeting of the year tonight; click here to read the minutes of the meeting.

A new section has been added to the website. Called 'Where to Run,' this page is perfect for those of you who are looking for a new route in town or someplace other than Morris to run. Special attention will be given to parks and other places with good trails. If you have a favorite course or park, email the club and we'll post it for everyone to enjoy.

5/7/00

The officer election / pizza party was held on May 3rd. Jake, Steve, and Brian retained their current offices. Professor Stephen Gross was introduced as the club's new advisor. He's always looking for partners to accompany him on 20-milers in preparation for marathons!

Plans are underway for a Homecoming race in the fall. Email the club if you're interested in helping out.

4/16/00

Nominations and announcements for the positions of club president, vice-president, and treasurer are now being accepted until April 30th. Elections will be held in the first week of May. There's talk of food and a movie afterwards, so you won't want to miss it. Email or call in your candidate.

3/21/00

The red tape is gone. We are now officially a club! Look for more activities and posters promoting running club activities soon! Any comments and suggestions as to the direction of the club are certainly welcome.

Two new races have been posted: The Chase Race and the Grandma's Pre-Marathon Race. Both are in Fargo in May and both are excellent runs.

3/04/00

Five of us went to Glacial Lakes State Park for a perfect day of running. More trips there are definitely in the works for the future, so stay tuned.

1/22/00

Until the weather warms up to a temperature that is bearable to stand around outside in, the Sunday group run will be meeting in the south entrance to the student center.

11/15/99

The club constitution has passed the constitutional committee and now awaits review by the Student Services Subcommittee. If things go smoothly, we could be a club by the end of the semester!

10/20/99

St. Cloud State University is sponsoring two road races on the 30th of October, a 10k run and a 5k run. Information and a printable entry form are on the 'Upcoming Races' page.

10/17/99

Sunday runs have now been moved back to 4:00 in the afternoon to compensate for the lack of evening sunlight. Autumn is fading fast, taking with it some of the best running days of the year. Don't lose your chance to get out and enjoy nature for one last time!

9/19/99

I put up the times from tonight's group run if anyone is interested. I thought it would be a good way to plot one's performance over the coming year. Also, the Lake Country Gardens race is next Saturday (the 25th) and if anyone still wants to go, they should let me know so I can get them a registration form.

9/15/99

Partial results from the St. Francis 5k are now available. Our trip north was successful, as we took home five medals, a half-gallon of ice cream, and $20 in gift certificates.

Well, it's not pretty, but it's up. Take a look around and imagine what it will be like after a couple more weeks, once some substantial content is added.

'Club.info' contains the essentials to any club: the officers, the constitution, and the weekly meeting date. What? A weekly meeting? Actually it's just a run around town. That's it. No pressure to attend.

Once we're more organized, 'sunday.times' will be a log of our Sunday night runs, complete with distances, times, and approximate paces. Participation is optional and very simple to do.

The 'upcoming.races' link will tell you all you need to know about future road races in the area. If you've never done a road race before in your life, try one! Like I say, there's nothing more satisfying in life than running a 40-year old man into the ground.

Once those races are over, what's more fun than showing off your accomplishments? The 'recent.results' page will contain a whole bunch of information about the time, places, and people of races past. Think of it as your own digital shrine.

If it's a running partner you're looking for, the 'partners' link will solve your problems. It's sort of a personal ad for the lonely jogger. Email me if you want to sign up.

The 'forum' link may be of particular interest, for there you can post messages and chat with fellow club members on the topic of your choice. It's interactivity at it's best, man. You'll have to join to fully participate, but it's a free and harmless procedure.

Running is a popular topic on the web, and the 'links' link will provide you with a variety of sources from which to browse.

Enjoy.
