History of the MACCC

UMM Efforts to Create a Child Care Center

Various groups at the University of Minnesota, Morris (UMM) tried for 20 years to create a child care center on campus with no success. The UMM Commission on Women took over the effort in 1990.

  • Since its inception, the UMM Commission on Women identified the creation of a child care center as a high priority.
  • UMM Chancellor Dave Johnson appointed the Child Care Task Force in response to Commission on Women concerns in 1990-91.
  • By 1992-93, the Child Care Task Force felt that space on campus was at a premium and recommended that a joint UMM/Morris area community group be appointed as the Child Care Advisory Council (CCAC) to work toward the creation of a child care center somewhere in Morris.
  • In 1992-93, under the leadership of Coordinator Janet Ahern, the Commission hired a part-time resource person for the child care center intiative (first Nancy Jost, then Mark Olson and Sarah Kissock held the post).
  • For the next two years, the CCAC worked on finding a suitable location, writing grants for start-up funds, fundraising, etc.
  • During this time, the CCAC determined that a separate NON-PROFIT organization would have to be created in order to make the most of grant opportunities and so the MACCC was born.
  • The Commission pledged a significant amount of its carryover funds to the MACCC in the form of an external lab fee which was paid in installments.
  • The Chancellor made a contribution on behalf of the campus which was matched by the SCEIC.
  • MACCC opened its doors in September 1995.

The Morris campus has continued its support of MACCC through extension of an external lab fee under the leadership of Chancellor Sam Schuman.
