Mus3102 Core Studies III: Classic, Romantic and 20th Century Music
Richard Jean RichardsUniversity of Minnesota, Morris 4 Semester Credits

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
To explore the historical development of music from the Classic Romantic and Modern Eras (circa early 18th C. to late 20th C.). We will be looking at compositions, composers and performance practices; and observing the connections between them. This will be done through reading, analyzing scores, and listening. Active learning and critical thinking will be emphasized. Given the amount of time we have, some specialist composers that students work with in lessons may be omitted. Music history is a study of major composers and important trends in music and must invariably leave out many important but minor composers and works.

EXPECTED LEVELS OF COMPETENCY
Reading/Listening quizzes are given frequently to insure that students are both reading and comprehending the text and are simultaneously listening to the compositions. Mastery of the content and clear writing about the significance of the content are expected. Critical thinking and synthesis of new concepts will be emphasized in class discussions, on quizzes and tests, and in the paper.
