Communication, Media & Rhetoric

Do you enjoy lively conversation?  Do you find yourself scrutinizing arguments?  Are you curious about communication across cultures?  Do you want to know what the law says about Free Speech?  Do you like to discuss television and films?

You can explore, examine, and critique these topics and more while studying Communication, Media & Rhetoric at the University of Minnesota, Morris!

At UMM, the Communication, Media & Rhetoric discipline is an exciting and multi-faceted academic discipline including studies in the fields of Communication Theory, Mass Media, Rhetoric, and Free Speech.

As a student at UMM, you will have the opportunity to learn about ethical and effective communication in diverse settings and contexts, to participate in speaking, writing, listening, and mass media production, and to create evaluations and analyses of a variety of types of communication.

Communication, Media & Rhetoric students at UMM have opportunities to participate in national and international student exchange programs, internships, service learning, and faculty research, and to gain experiences through student activities on campus such as the University Register (campus newspaper), KUMM (student radio), and the Intercollegiate Speech Team (student-run, competitive team.)

OUR GRADUATES HAVE THIS TO SAY:

I focused my study a little toward media studies, and it really taught me a lot about the mass media and its role in the world today. It's made me a much more critical consumer of advertising, news and public relations actions on behalf of corporations, and the experiences I had in television and film production were great teachers. Though I am not entering the field, I am sure that I will use these skills in the future, hopefully to continue to help community organizations like we did with Health Communities/Healthy Youth, as well as assist communities in making informed decisions, like providing the informational video about the conditions in the former Morris Elementary school.

I think the Communication, Media & Rhetoric major offers a great range of possibilities for students to experience and focus on, and it lends itself well to a wide range of potential careers and fields for advanced study.
