French Discipline
Bienvenue, tout le monde!
Welcome to the French Discipline at UMM!
Our goal is to envision with you how French studies adds a meaningful dimension to your understanding of today's world and your own place in it. Through a combination of challenging coursework, mentoring opportunities, and extra-curricular activities in French, the French Discipline at UMM makes la francophonie, in all of its variety, part of the world we live in, here and now.

The French curriculum presents several options, all of which can be combined with a second course of study.
-
A major (40 credits minimum) develops strong communication skills in French and a well-rounded and nuanced understanding of France and other francophone regions, past and present
- A minor (24 credits minimum) ensures that you have meaningful language skills and a broad understanding of French and francophone regions
- A certificate (12 college credits minimum) provides intermediate to advanced intermediate linguistic competence
Your experiences in the French Discipline will be a springboard for a lifelong experience with French and travel abroad. Recent graduates of the French Discipline are:
- living and working in France for a year before pursuing graduate study in French
- teaching French in a Minnesota high school
- handling customer relations with French-speaking clients in Quebec for a MN firm
- working in the American office of a computer firm (in Fargo) with offices in Paris
- serving the Peace Corps in Togo, West Africa
Whether you are beginning French or continuing French studies at UMM, the skills and knowledge gained will serve you well, wherever your life and career choices may take you.
