Ray Schultz, Theatre

Greten E. Minton, Ray Schultz, ”Angels in America: Adapting to a New Medium in a New Millennium," In American Drama, Volume 15.1 pages 17-42, 2006

Abstract: Critics almost unanimously praised the 2003 HBO production of Tony Kushner's two-part epic Angels in America as a triumphant adaptation of a stage play for television. However, as this article argues, it is debatable that shrinking this monumental work to fit the confines of the small screen has been achieved without some measure of compromise to the play's epic scope and queer sensibility. The television film of Angels in America largely emerges as the vision of its director, Mike Nichols, who fashions a far slicker, more realistic treatment of the material than the stage version, which is rooted in the overtly theatrical techniques of Bertolt Brecht. Although the HBO production boasts some impressive performances and retains a great deal of Kushner's powerful, literate text, what has been lost is the stage production's epic sweep and radical sense of queer politics.
