MAIN ACADEMICS PEOPLE ACTIVITIES RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES LIFE AFTER UMM

There is always a lot happening at UMM to keep students engaged and entertained. Beyond the reading, programming, group projects, research and hours in the labs there is always something to get involved in and enjoy.

Many of the non-class related events are spontaneous, with students simply deciding to get together and do something. There are also a large number of actively organized activities provided by the two student organizations that support the Computer Science discpline at UMM.

ACM Club

Founded in 1947, the international ACM organization is a major force in advancing the skills of information technology professionals and students worldwide. Today, our 75,000 members and the public turn to ACM for the industry's leading Portal to Computing Literature, authoritative publications and pioneering conferences, providing leadership for the 21st century.

The ACM also maintains hundreds of students chapters around the world to promote advancement and excellence in Computer Science. The UMM chapter of the ACM organizes field trips to local companies (IBM in Rochester, MN is a particular favorite), has internship information sessions, and also promotes several other activities to both increase the competitiveness and marketability of UMM students in the workforce.

The ACM Club isn't all about work though. The group also hosts movie nights, LAN gaming parties, the year end "ByteBash" picnic and several other activities to entertain and strengthen the Computer Science community at UMM.

Women in Computer Science

Women in Computer Science

Women in Computer Science at UMM is an organization that includes women who take and teach CSci classes at UMM. We get together a few times a year for a fun evening and an informal conversation. New Computer Science students get a chance to meet seniors and juniors who can give them help and advice about classes, student life, starting out on research, and whatever else they might be concerned about. With the number of women in CSci classes still noticeably lower than the number of men, Women in Computer Science provides friendly support for young women who are starting out in CSci.

And, most importantly, it's an opportunity to relax and have fun with friends! There is never a shortage of ideas for an exciting evening. Some of our recent activities included watching a computer-animated movie "Finding Nemo", playing board games, and a night of pizza and bowling. If you want to find out more, please contact Elena or Dian.
