JANE GOODALL'S CHIMPANZEES
1. In this video, Jane Goodall discusses the social life of one chimpanzee family, centered on Flo, her daughter Fifi, and Fifi's children.
Pay attention to the complexity of social life in this troop. What kind of mother was Fifi? How might this have affected the social status of her sons, Freud and Frodo?
Pay particular attention to the relationship between Freud and Frodo in this video--how do they get along? What strategies and behaviors do each of them use in their interactions toward each other and other members of the troop?
What is the purpose of displays and how do they affect interaction among members of the troop? What is the importance of grooming?
2. Note the techniques Goodall used to study the chimpanzees. What discoveries did she make that changed the way we look at chimpanzees? What evidence do you see for learned behavior?
3. What is the nature and makeup of the chimpanzee troop? How do they interact with other species, such as baboons? With colobus monkeys?
