"IN SEARCH OF HUMAN ORIGINS"

PART III: THE CREATIVE REVOLUTION

The third part in the series focuses on Neanderthals. Two differing perspectives are presented on how hominids moved out of Africa and evolved.

1. Note the kinds of evidence used by Stringer, who argues for the "Out of Africa" theory. Also note the kinds of evidence presented by Thorne to support the "Multiregional" theory. What argument is made about the fossils at the Klassie s River in Africa? The fossils in Australia? Java? China?

 2. In the video, the Neanderthals are contrasted to "Homo sapiens;" be aware of this problem in terminology, for Neanderthals are Homo sapiens. Nonetheless, pay attention to differences in the ways of l ife of these two groups (Neanderthals and Cro-Magnon): where they lived, how they survived, their technological capacities.

 3. As you view this video, pay attention to what the "creative revolution" was and to whom it is attributed. You will have to know what it is for the exam.
