"IN SEARCH OF HUMAN ORIGINS"
PART I: THE STORY OF LUCY
Donald Johanson narrates this film. His voice is condescending, but overlook that and focus on several features of the video:
Pay attention to the process of fossilization described in the video and note Johanson's research methods.
Look for out-dated or facile statements made by Johanson in regard to evolution and interpretations about Australopithecus afarensis. For example, he speaks of "missing links," and still applies gender-biased assumptions ab out behavior.
Pay close attention to how he compares/contrasts the Lucy fossil to apes/chimpanzees--how they are alike, how they differ.
Follow the video's discussion of bipedalism, environmental factors associated with it, and inferences made about hominid behavior.
What is the "revolutionary idea" mentioned
in the video--there will be a specific exam question on this.
