Anthropology Field School in Mexico

Located in the Mexican village of Los Angeles, Michoacán,

students studied the impact of the closing of the San Sebastián sugar mill on that village. In addition, individual projects included research on changes in agricultural technology and the environment, the formation and operation of a women’s cooperative tortilla factory, beliefs and practices related to traditional healing, changes in gender roles in the community, and practical experience in teaching secondary-level school children.

Undergraduate field school participants had the unique opportunity to work as anthropologists,

while living with a loving Mexican family for the entire semester. They honed their skills in conducting research, enriched their Spanish skills, and enjoyed a semester of eating wonderful Mexican food!
